altThe Invitational University Baseball tournament organized by the baseball crew of University of Moratuwa, came to an end last Friday with University of Colombo convincingly beating University of Sri Jayawardanapura in the final. The tournament which started on 19th Thursday went on for two days with six teams competing in two league groups and the top teams of both groups to qualify for the final. The tournament took a shocking turn as the hosting team, University of Moratuwa was beaten by University of Jayawardenapura in the first match of the tournament, as Mora baseball lost their hopes to qualify for the finals. Even though University of Moratuwa managed to defeat University of Wayamba convincingly, it was not good enough since J’pura advanced to the final as the unbeaten team from the group.

The other group featuring beaseball teams of Universities Colombo, Peradeniya and Kelaniya took a highly competitive look, as Colombo and peradeniya faught out till the end in a nail biting final qualifier which took place before the final. The match was full of excitement as the teams had to go for a tie breaker extra inning in which university of Colombo took the lead to beat Pera, qualifying for the final.

Prof. U.T.A. Puswewala was the chief guest for the presentation ceremony in which the champions and the runners up were rewarded with trophies for their performances. Special awards were given away for individual performances under the categories of best fielder, batter, pitcher and the most valuable player which were shared by players from Universities Colombo, j’pura and Peradeniya.

The team is well reputed among the Sri Lankan baseball fans for their discipline, dedication and team work illustrated during the game.
