RATHNAYAKE MEMORIAL CHALLENGE TROPHY’ is an important milestone in the inter university volleyball calendar. University of Moratuwa Volleyball teams along with the Physical Education Division of UOM proudly organize this event for the 5th consecutive time on 16th July, 2012. University of Sri Jayawardenapura and University of Wayamba will be invited to compete along with the hosts in both men’s and women’s categories.

Winning the inaugural ‘GAMUNU RATHNAYAKE MEMORIAL CHALLENGE TROPHY’ in 2008 kicked off a dream run in UOM volleyball history. That triumph was followed by the inter-university crown at their own backyard in front of an enormous crowd. UOM’s dream run was capped off by the runners up trophy in the sports festival at PESIT, Bangalore, India for the first time in UOM volleyball history.

The tournament was named after a former UOM volleyball player Mr. Gemunu Rathnayake who was fallen victim to the tragic bomb blast in Katubedda in 2008.

This tournament is a wonderful opportunity to get some match practice prior to the inter University games. The first version of the tournament was organized with the presence of University of Wayamba and University of Sri Jayawardanapura. The inaugural final was played between UOM and USJP and after a grueling contest UOM became victorious.

Since its humble beginning in 2008 this tournament has become a vital juncture in the inter University volleyball calendar with continuous improvements. The organizing committee guided adeptly by the director of Physical education department Mr. K.R.D.C. Rathnamudali and the former players namely Isuru, Nishan, Venusha, and Sampath deserves a round of applause for the effort they have put in making this tournament such a huge success.

Hope to see you all in the University of Moratuwa new gymnasium on 16th of July 15, 2012 to witness an enthralling battle between three of the volleyball giants in the University arena.
