A friendly Baseball match was held between the baseball teams of University of Kelaniya and University of Moratuwa on Friday 4th of January 2013 in order to commemorate the second year anniversary of University of Kelaniya Baseball team.

The baseball team of University of Kelaniya was initiated on 4th of January 2011, with the patronage of Mr. Yasas Attanayaka and the sports council of University of Kelaniya. As they completed their second year on Friday, boys of Mora Baseball team were invited for a friendly battle in order to give true meaning for their last two years’ endeavors to improve Baseball and to promote Baseball within the University.

In spite of being a friendly match, it had all the essence of a wonderful game of Baseball. The Kelaniya Baseball team was headed by Chamath Hirantha and was accompanied by Pubudu Perera, who played the role of the vice-captain. The skipper of Moratuwa Baseball team Dinusha Amarathunga led his side alongside NimeshLakmal. The match started under gloomy conditions. Both sides gave their maximum to produce a wonderful match filled with true spirit and sportsmanship. After a combat of seven anxious innings, Kelaniya boys grasped a nail biting victory with a score line of 16-15. Pubudu Perera, played an exemplary vice captain’s knock by scoring five runs to guide his side to a well-deserved victory. The five runs scored by Dhilina Nissanka were very much vital in Mora’s fight back. Despite of their edgy defeat, Mora boys were really proud and privileged to be a part of this great event.

The captain of Kelaniya University Baseball team, Chamath Hirantha, stated that they dedicate this wonderful triumph to their beloved member of the team, K.P. Akalanka, who passed away few months ago. He further expressed his sincere gratitude to the past members and all the others including the University of Moratuwa Baseball team for making this event a great success.

A wonderful game of Baseball came to an end proving the true gist of sportsmanship.

While the “Mora” team would be celebrating their

remarkable victory in grand style they are already eyeing to defend their title at SLUG 2013, which is due to be held on home turf.

Baseball Inter University Championship was inaugurated in 2010. Prior to that there had been invitational championships among universities where University of Moratuwa had dominated.

University of Moratuwa’s first ever Inter University Baseball win capped off a fantastic day of baseball filled with some exciting performances and thrilling finishes. It was day that reminded us of the blockbuster movie Moneyball starring Brad Pitt, where a smaller baseball team went on to thrash mammoth opposition with unity and pride. University of Moratuwa were unfancied coming into the tournament but through their grit and mettle they’ve shown what they are really made of. It’s an inspiring story for all sportsmen, sportswomen and sports lovers alike.

It is all set up for this year’s edition of inter uni baseball tournament in Moratuwa University grounds on 2nd & 3rd June. This is the biggest event in the university baseball calendar.

Defending champions University of Colombo (UOC), is one of the front runners in the tournament.  They also won the Mora baseball cup last year. The team is woven around the two national players Thisara Dampiya and Chamara Pieris. Team from hill capital came second in inter uni 2011 and they won the SLUG championship, 2010.  They also have the likes of Lasanthe Sanjeewa Manna Uthum, who have played for the national team.

University of Moratuwa (UOM) team led by Thenuwan Jayasinghe is fresh looking side having an attractive blend of experience brought on to the table by Sri Lanka national first baseman Niroshan Susith Punchihewa and athleticism. They will be determined to win the crown in their own backyard.

Runners up of the SLUG baseball tournament, University of Sri Jayawardenapura (USJP) team also practice hard to add point to their tally. They also have key players like Gammanpila. USJP got the 4th place in inter uni 2011.

Univiversity of Kelaniya (KEL), Sabaragamuwa Univiversity(SAB), Univiversity of Ruhuna (RUH) & Wayamba Univiversity (WAY) teams are fairly new to the university baseball arena, but they have been playing spiritedly throughout this short period of time. They would be eyeing eagerly to create a few upsets to the big boys.

it would undoubtedly be a delight to watch the teams packed with national players banging their heads against each other for the coveted championship in the University baseball arena.

This will be the first event to add points to the men’s column in inter uni 2012.
